When I was young I asked my parents for a hockey stick, they did get me one but the problem was the one I had envisioned was a neon green with black on it, one of the cool kids at school had it and even being given an opportunity to touch it was a privilege. I guess I thought that if I got one I would be at least half cool, the one I got however had orange and yellow on it, it was nice but it wasn’t neon green. From that day onwards I have had an irrational expectation of disappointment, that I should never have high expectations, because they couldn’t really logically be given to me as I had envisioned. It’s amazing how we can base our whole life theory on a simple event that maybe does not even logically connect. So my life theory has been never to expect anything good.
Flipping the script
I read Steve Harvey’s book titled Act Like a Success, Think Like a Success: Discovering Your Gift and the Way to Life’s Riches and there is a chapter that talks about having a first class vision or high expectations. It is only in having high expectations of ourselves, our partners, our life that we can get the best out of our life and opportunities. It turns out going through life without expectations or only the negative expectations is not a way of protecting yourself from disappointment because in the greater scheme of things it might not be exact, but you usually get what you expect. So what if it’s a different color or it came in the wrong box, expect good things anyway.
